Short answer: Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades applicants must show settlement funds for Express Entry. IRCC's current table (updated 7 July 2025 and still shown in October 2026) starts at CAD 15,263 for one person and CAD 28,362 for a family of four. Canadian Experience Class applicants, and applicants authorised to work in Canada with a valid job offer, do not need proof of funds.

Proof of funds is a step where many Express Entry applicants need careful planning, especially families whose savings sit in property, gold or relatives' accounts. IRCC only counts money the applicant can actually access. This guide explains the Express Entry proof of funds rules, the official table, what a bank letter must show and a checklist for Jalandhar and Punjab applicants.

Most applicants from India with no Canadian work experience apply under FSW, so they need funds. Applicants already working in Canada often qualify under CEC instead; see our Canadian Experience Class guide.

Express Entry Proof of Funds Table (Current IRCC Amounts)

These are the minimum amounts on IRCC's proof of funds page. IRCC says it updates them every year based on 50% of the low income cut-off totals. The table was last updated on 7 July 2025 and was still the published table when we checked in October 2026.

Convert the amount to rupees at the exchange rate on the day you check, and keep a comfortable buffer above the minimum. Exchange rates move, and a balance that only just meets the figure can fall short when your visa is issued.

Who Counts as a Family Member?

You must count yourself, your spouse or common-law partner, your dependent children and your partner's dependent children. IRCC says to include them even if they are not coming to Canada with you, and even if they are already Canadian citizens or permanent residents. A married applicant from Ludhiana whose spouse will stay in India still uses the 2-person figure.

What Counts as Proof of Funds (and What Does Not)

IRCC's rules focus on money you can legally access when you arrive. Based on the official page:

Generally accepted

Not accepted or not enough on its own

Savings and current account balances in your name

Equity in property, land or a house

Money in a joint account with your spouse or partner

Money borrowed from another person

Investments that appear in your financial institution letter

Money you cannot legally access when you arrive

Funds in your spouse's sole name, if you prove you can access them

Funds held only in a parent's or relative's name

The money must be available both when you apply for permanent residence and when IRCC issues your visa. If your balance drops below the required amount between those dates, you may no longer meet the requirement.

If relatives give you money, transfer it into your own account well in advance, keep records showing where it came from, and make sure it is a genuine gift rather than a loan. Large unexplained deposits shortly before applying can lead to questions.

What Your Bank Letter Must Include

IRCC asks for official letters from each bank or financial institution where you hold money. Each letter must be printed on the institution's letterhead and include:

  • The institution's contact information: address, telephone number and email address

  • Your name

  • Your outstanding debts, such as credit card debts and loans

  • For each current bank and investment account: the account number, the date it was opened, the current balance and the average balance for the past 6 months

Indian banks do not always use this format by default. Ask your branch in Jalandhar or wherever you bank for a letter that covers every point, and check it line by line. Bank statements on their own are not the same as the letter IRCC asks for.

The Job-Offer Exemption and the November 2026 Change

You do not need proof of funds if you are authorised to work in Canada and have a valid job offer. IRCC's job offer page says that from 3 November 2026 you do not need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) for a job offer to qualify, and officers will check that offers are genuine. IRCC also notes the online system may not yet reflect this change. If you plan to rely on a job offer instead of funds, confirm on the official pages how this applies to your case before you skip the funds evidence.

Express Entry Proof of Funds Checklist for Punjab Applicants

  1. Confirm your program. FSW and FST need funds; CEC does not.

  2. Count every family member, including a spouse or child not coming to Canada.

  3. Check the current amount on the official IRCC page on the day you create your profile and again before you submit.

  4. Keep the money in accounts in your name or a joint account with your spouse.

  5. Avoid borrowed money and do not count property, land or gold.

  6. Build a 6-month history. IRCC asks for the average balance over the past 6 months, so last-minute deposits look weaker.

  7. Get a bank letter from every institution that covers contact details, your debts, account numbers, opening dates, current and 6-month average balances.

  8. Keep the funds in place until your visa is issued.

  9. Plan for arrival: if you carry cash or monetary instruments worth CAD 10,000 or more, you must report them to the Canada Border Services Agency when you enter.

Other FSW Requirements to Check First

Funds are only one part of eligibility. According to IRCC's Federal Skilled Worker page, you also need at least 1 year of continuous paid work (or 1,560 hours) in the last 10 years in a TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 job, a minimum of CLB 7 in all four language abilities, an Educational Credential Assessment for foreign education, and at least 67 out of 100 points on the FSW selection grid. Our IELTS score requirements by country guide explains test scores, and our Express Entry CRS and draws guide covers ranking and invitations.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using the single-person amount when a spouse is not travelling

  • Showing fixed deposits or accounts in a father's or mother's name

  • Submitting bank statements instead of a proper bank letter

  • Bank letters that leave out outstanding loans or the 6-month average balance

  • Moving money out after the invitation, before the visa is issued

Frequently Asked Questions

How much proof of funds do I need for Express Entry in 2026?

IRCC's current table, last updated on 7 July 2025, asks for CAD 15,263 for a single applicant, CAD 19,001 for a family of two, CAD 23,360 for three and CAD 28,362 for four, rising by CAD 4,112 for each member over seven. IRCC updates the figures every year, so check the official page before you submit.

Who does not need proof of funds for Express Entry?

Canadian Experience Class applicants do not need proof of funds. Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades applicants are also exempt if they are authorised to work in Canada and have a valid job offer. Exempt applicants should still upload a short letter explaining the exemption.

Can I use my parents' money or a loan as proof of funds?

Borrowed money is not accepted. IRCC says you cannot borrow settlement funds from another person, and the money must be available to you and legally accessible when you arrive in Canada. Funds held only in a parent's name do not show that you can access them.

Can I show property or land in Punjab as proof of funds?

No. IRCC does not accept equity in real property as proof of settlement funds. Only money you can access, such as bank balances and investments that can be withdrawn, should be counted.

Do I need to count family members who are not coming to Canada?

Yes. You must count your spouse or partner and dependent children even if they are not coming with you, and even if they are already Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Can I use a joint account with my spouse?

Yes. IRCC accepts money in a joint account with your spouse or partner. If the money is in your spouse's name only, you must prove you have access to it.

Last verified: October 2026. IRCC updates settlement fund amounts every year and can change rules at any time. This article is general information, not legal or financial advice.
