IELTS Score Requirements by Country 2026: Canada, UK, Australia and More for Punjab Applicants

Short answer: There is no single IELTS score that works everywhere. For study visas, your university or college usually sets the IELTS score, while the government sets the minimum for work permits and PR. For example, Canada asks for CLB 7 (IELTS General Training 6.0 in each skill) for Federal Skilled Worker PR, the UK asks for B2 English for degree-level students and Skilled Workers, and Australia's skilled visas start at "competent English" (IELTS 6 in each component).

Students in Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Amritsar often hear numbers like "6 bands" or "6.5 each" from friends without knowing which visa or test they apply to. This guide sorts the IELTS score requirements by country 2026 into one place, using official government pages, and flags the traps that cause refusals or delays, such as taking the wrong IELTS version. For test strategy, see our IELTS tips for Punjab students and PTE vs IELTS comparison.

Who Sets the IELTS Score: University or Government?

This is the most common source of confusion. There are two separate gates:

  • Admission gate: your university or college decides the score it needs for your course. This is often higher than any visa minimum and varies by course.

  • Visa gate: the immigration department sets a minimum for some visas, especially work permits, skilled migration and PR. Some study visas rely mainly on the institution's assessment.

Always meet the higher of the two; that is the key to reading IELTS score requirements by country 2026 correctly. A score that gets you a visa minimum can still be too low for your chosen course, and the reverse is also true.

Canada: Study Permit, PGWP and PR

Study permit

IRCC does not set one IELTS score for all study permit applicants. Your designated learning institution sets the requirement on your letter of acceptance, and many colleges and universities publish separate scores for diplomas, bachelor's and master's programs. Visa officers can still look at whether your English matches your study plan, so a very low score for a demanding course can raise questions.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

If you apply for a PGWP on or after 1 November 2024, you must prove English or French. IRCC requires CLB 7 if you studied a bachelor's, master's, doctoral or other university program, and CLB 5 for college, polytechnic and other non-university programs, in all four skills. IRCC's PGWP language page lists IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for English, not IELTS Academic. Many students take Academic for admission and then need a fresh General Training or CELPIP result before graduating. Read more in our PGWP eligibility guide.

Express Entry and Canada PR

The Federal Skilled Worker Program needs at least CLB 7 in all four skills. The Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 jobs and CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3 jobs, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program needs CLB 5 in speaking and listening and CLB 4 in reading and writing. Results must be less than 2 years old, and IRCC does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. Minimums only make you eligible; CLB 9 or higher adds many more CRS points. See our Express Entry guide.

United Kingdom: Student and Skilled Worker Visas

UK rules use the CEFR scale (B1, B2 and so on) rather than IELTS bands. For a Student visa you need B2 for degree-level study and above, and B1 for courses below degree level. At degree level, your university can assess your English itself and may ask for its own test or score, as long as it is equivalent to B2. Otherwise you need a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider.

For tests taken outside the UK, GOV.UK's SELT guidance lists four providers: IELTS for UKVI (or IELTS Life Skills), PTE Academic UKVI (or PTE Home), LanguageCert SELT and Skills for English UKVI. A regular IELTS Academic test is not automatically a SELT, so check which version your university and visa route need before booking a slot in Jalandhar or Chandigarh.

The Skilled Worker visa now asks for B2. If you held a Skilled Worker visa before 8 January 2026 and are extending it, B1 still applies. Read more in our UK Skilled Worker visa guide. Family visas have their own staged requirement, explained in our UK spouse visa guide.

Australia: Student Visa and Skilled PR

For the Student visa (subclass 500), Home Affairs sets a minimum test score that can be lower if you combine it with an ELICOS English course before your main course. Your university will usually ask for more. Because these figures have changed in recent years, check the current table on the Home Affairs student visa page before you book a test.

For skilled migration (subclasses 189, 190 and 491), you need at least competent English. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs lists:

Level

IELTS (each component)

PTE Academic (L / R / W / S)

Competent

6

47 / 48 / 51 / 54

Proficient

7

58 / 59 / 69 / 76

Sources: Home Affairs competent English and proficient English. Proficient and superior English earn extra points on the points test. Home Affairs accepts IELTS One Skill Retake for eligible visas but does not accept IELTS Online for competent English. Compare the PR routes in our Australia 189 vs 190 vs 491 guide.

USA, New Zealand and Germany

  • USA (F-1): the US government does not set an IELTS score. Universities decide, and many accept TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo. Your visa interview is in English, so speaking confidence matters. See our F-1 interview questions guide.

  • New Zealand: for student visas, your education provider generally sets English entry requirements. Check the provider's course page and immigration.govt.nz.

  • Germany: English-taught programs set their own scores. The points-based Opportunity Card route asks for basic German (A1) or English at B2; see our Opportunity Card guide.

Checklist: Choosing and Booking the Right Test

  1. Write down your goal: study only, study then work, or direct PR.

  2. Note the institution's score for your course and any visa minimum, and target the higher one.

  3. Pick the right version: IELTS Academic for most admissions, IELTS General Training or CELPIP for Canada PGWP and PR, or a UKVI-approved SELT for UK visas where needed.

  4. Check validity: Canada needs results under 2 years old, so time your test for when you will actually apply.

  5. Check name and passport details match exactly on your booking and test report form.

  6. Plan a buffer: book early, because peak intake months fill test dates fast at centres in Punjab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IELTS mandatory for a Canada study visa in 2026?

IRCC does not set one fixed IELTS score for study permits. Your college or university sets the English requirement, and most ask for IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or similar. You will later need IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core for a PGWP.

What IELTS score is needed for Canada PR?

For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the minimum is CLB 7 in all four skills, which is IELTS General Training 6.0 in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Higher scores such as CLB 9 (listening 8.0, others 7.0) add many more CRS points.

Can I use IELTS Academic for a PGWP or Express Entry?

No. For Express Entry and PGWP language proof, IRCC lists IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for English. IELTS Academic, often used for admission, is not on those lists.

What IELTS score is needed for a UK student visa?

UK rules ask for B2 English for degree-level study and B1 below degree level. Universities can assess degree-level students themselves; otherwise you need an approved SELT such as IELTS for UKVI. Universities often set their own, higher course scores.

What IELTS score do I need for Australia PR?

Skilled visas such as subclass 189, 190 and 491 need at least competent English, which is IELTS 6 in each component for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Proficient English (IELTS 7 each) and superior English earn extra points.

Is the IELTS One Skill Retake accepted for immigration?

It depends on the country. Canada does not accept One Skill Retake for Express Entry. Australia's Home Affairs accepts IELTS results with One Skill Retake for eligible visas. Check the official page for your visa before relying on it.
