World-class education with globally ranked universities
Multicultural environment & welcoming immigration policies
Clear pathways to Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) and Permanent Residency (PR)
Affordable compared to the US, UK, or Australia
Canada has implemented a cap on international student permits to control over-enrollment and housing pressure.
Impact: Provinces now have quotas; some regions like Ontario and British Columbia may be more competitive.
Tip: Apply early and target designated learning institutions (DLIs) in lesser-populated provinces like Alberta, Saskatchewan, or Atlantic Canada.
Since 2024, applicants must now submit a PAL along with their visa application. This is an extra document issued by the province confirming the institution’s quota hasn’t been exceeded.
Tip: Check with your chosen college/university to ensure they can issue a PAL before you apply.
IRCC has raised the minimum proof of funds requirement from CAD $10,000 to CAD $20,635 (2024) to better reflect the cost of living.
You now need to show:
First-year tuition fees
CAD $20,635 for living expenses
Additional funds if accompanied by family
Starting late 2024, PGWP is no longer available for private college students in many provinces.
Impact: Only students enrolled in public institutions or public-private partnerships are eligible for PGWP.
Tip: Choose your college wisely. PGWP is crucial if you’re planning to get PR after studies.
Canada is restricting spousal work permits. As of mid-2024, spouses of students enrolled in:
Master’s and Ph.D. programs are still eligible
Diploma or undergraduate programs may not qualify
Tip: If you’re planning to bring your spouse, choose a program that ensures their eligibility.
Apply early: Visa caps and quota systems make delays more likely
Select DLIs carefully: Prefer public institutions with PGWP eligibility
Prepare stronger financial documents
Check program-level details: Especially if you’re bringing dependents
