India Young Professionals Scheme Visa 2027: UK Ballot, £2,530 Savings Rule and Checklist for Punjab Graduates

Short answer: The India Young Professionals Scheme visa lets Indian citizens aged 18 to 30 with a bachelor's degree or higher live, work and study in the UK for up to 24 months, with no job offer or employer sponsor needed. Places are limited (3,000 in 2026) and you can only apply after being picked in a free online ballot. The 2026 ballots ran in February and July, and GOV.UK says there will be no further ballots in 2026, so Punjab graduates should use the coming months to get ready for the next round.

For graduates in Jalandhar, Ludhiana and across Punjab who want UK work experience without a sponsored job, this is one of the most flexible routes available. It is also one of the most misunderstood: it cannot be extended, family members cannot be added to your application, and selection is purely random. This guide explains the rules exactly as published on the official GOV.UK India Young Professionals Scheme page and how to prepare properly.

Who Is Eligible for the India Young Professionals Scheme Visa?

According to GOV.UK, you must meet all of the following:

  • Be an Indian national aged between 18 and 30, and at least 18 on your planned travel date.

  • Hold a qualification at bachelor's degree level or above (RQF level 6, 7 or 8), or an equivalent overseas degree-level qualification.

  • Have at least £2,530 in your bank account, held for 28 consecutive days, with day 28 falling within 31 days of your visa application.

  • Not have any children under 18 who live with you or whom you are financially responsible for.

  • Not have already been in the UK on this scheme or on the Youth Mobility Scheme visa.

  • Be selected in the India Young Professionals Scheme ballot before applying.

If you turn 31 after your visa is issued, you can stay for as long as the visa is valid. The age limit applies when you apply, so do not wait until your last eligible year.

How the Ballot Works: Step by Step

  1. Watch the official ballot system page for the next dates. In 2026 the July ballot opened on 21 July and closed at 9am UK time on 23 July, so windows can be short.

  2. Enter for free with your name, date of birth, passport details, a scan or photo of your passport, phone number and email address. Only one entry per person is allowed in each ballot.

  3. Wait for the result email, which is sent within 2 weeks of the ballot closing. Results are final and cannot be appealed.

  4. If selected, apply online within 90 days of the results email, pay the £340 fee and the health surcharge, and give your fingerprints and photo at a visa application centre.

  5. Travel to the UK within 6 months of applying.

What You Can and Cannot Do on This Visa

You can

  • Work in most jobs, which makes it ideal for building UK experience.

  • Study (some courses need an ATAS certificate).

  • Be self-employed or set up a company, as long as your premises are rented, your equipment is worth no more than £5,000 and you have no employees.

  • Leave and re-enter the UK while the visa is valid.

You cannot

  • Extend your stay beyond the visa's validity.

  • Include a spouse or children on your application; family members must qualify and apply separately in their own right.

Document Checklist

  • Valid passport, ideally the same one whose details you gave in your ballot entry.

  • Bank statements showing at least £2,530 held for 28 consecutive days; read the GOV.UK financial evidence guidance on how statements must look.

  • Written confirmation from your college or university that you completed your studies and graduated with the required qualification.

  • TB test certificate from a UK-approved clinic.

  • Police report or clearance certificate from India.

  • Certified translations of any document not in English or Welsh.

How to Prepare Before the Next Ballot

  1. Check your passport validity and renew early if needed, because your ballot entry uses passport details.

  2. Ask your university early for a written completion and graduation confirmation, as this can take time to arrange.

  3. Plan your savings so the full amount stays in your account for 28 days without dipping below £2,530 at today's exchange rate, with a buffer for currency movement.

  4. Apply for your police clearance certificate in good time.

  5. Prepare a UK-style CV so you can start job hunting as soon as you arrive.

  6. Set a calendar reminder to check GOV.UK regularly; the July 2026 ballot window was open for only about two days.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Entering the ballot when you are not eligible, for example if you have a child under 18 you support.

  • Submitting more than one entry in the same ballot.

  • Missing the 90-day deadline after receiving a selection email.

  • Letting your bank balance fall below £2,530 during the 28-day period.

  • Paying agents who claim they can improve your ballot chances. Selection is random and free.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the next India Young Professionals Scheme ballot?

GOV.UK says there will be no further ballots in 2026. In 2026 most places were released in a February ballot and the rest in July. Future dates will be published on the GOV.UK ballot system page.

Is there an IELTS requirement for the India Young Professionals Scheme visa?

The GOV.UK eligibility page does not list an English language test for this visa. You do need a bachelor's-level degree, £2,530 in savings and selection in the ballot.

Can I take my wife or husband on the Young Professionals visa?

No. You cannot include family members on your application. A partner would need to qualify for and apply for a UK visa in their own right.

How much money do I need for the India Young Professionals Scheme visa?

You need £2,530 in savings held for 28 consecutive days, plus the £340 visa fee and £1,552 immigration health surcharge, and costs for your TB test, police certificate and travel.

Can I extend the Young Professionals visa or get settlement?

You cannot extend this visa. Some holders later move to another UK route, such as a Skilled Worker visa, if they meet that route's own requirements.

Can an agent guarantee selection in the UK ballot?

No. Entry is free, only one entry per person is allowed in each ballot, and winners are chosen at random. Anyone promising guaranteed selection is misleading you.
