Short answer: Yes, many UK universities run a January 2027 intake, and students from Punjab can still apply for it in October and November 2026. Three dates drive your plan: you can apply for a UK Student visa up to 6 months before your course starts, a decision from outside the UK usually takes about 3 weeks, and any visa application made on or after 30 November 2026 must show higher living-cost funds (£1,570 a month in London or £1,203 a month elsewhere, for up to 9 months).

For most Jalandhar and Doaba students aiming for January, the visa application will fall in late November or December 2026. That puts you right on top of the new funds rule, so the timing of your bank statement and your visa application matters more than usual this year. This guide sets out a month-by-month timeline, costs, a document checklist and the mistakes we see most often.

What Is the UK January Intake?

The UK has one main intake in September and a smaller one in January (sometimes called the winter intake). Some universities also offer starts in other months. The January intake is mostly for postgraduate taught courses such as one-year master's degrees in business, management, computing, data science, engineering and public health, plus some foundation and pre-sessional programmes. Fewer undergraduate courses start in January.

A January start leads to the same degree as a September start. The main differences are a smaller choice of courses, less scholarship funding and a shorter run-up to your visa application. Course availability and deadlines are set by each university, so always check the course page itself rather than a general list.

UK January Intake 2027 for Indian Students: Month-by-Month Timeline

The table below is a practical plan for a course starting in mid or late January 2027. University deadlines vary, so treat these as working targets, not official cut-offs.

Month

What to do

Why it matters

Now to early November 2026

Shortlist courses, check entry requirements and submit applications with your SOP, transcripts and English test score

Popular January courses can fill or close early

November 2026

Accept an unconditional offer, pay any deposit the university asks for and request your CAS

You cannot apply for the visa without a CAS from a licensed student sponsor

November 2026

Put your funds in place and start the 28-day holding period; book your TB test

Funds must be held for 28 consecutive days before you apply

Late November to December 2026

Apply for your Student visa online and give biometrics at the visa application centre

Decisions from outside the UK usually take about 3 weeks

December 2026

Book accommodation and flights only after your visa decision

Avoid losing money if anything is delayed

January 2027

Travel. For courses longer than 6 months you can arrive up to 1 month before the start date

You must not travel before the start date on your visa

If your course starts in January, the earliest you could apply for the visa was in July 2026, so time is not usually the problem. The real pressure points are getting the CAS issued and completing the 28-day funds window.

The 30 November 2026 Funds Change: Why Your Visa Date Matters

The Statement of Changes HC 584 raises the Student visa maintenance figures for applications made on or after 30 November 2026. Applications made before that date are decided under the rules in force on 29 November 2026.

Study location

Visa applied up to 29 Nov 2026

Visa applied on or after 30 Nov 2026

Maximum for 9 months (new rule)

London

£1,529 per month

£1,570 per month

£14,130

Outside London

£1,171 per month

£1,203 per month

£10,827

You must also show any first-year tuition fees still unpaid on your CAS. Worked example: a student from Jalandhar starting a one-year master's in Manchester in January 2027, applying on 5 December 2026, needs 9 × £1,203 = £10,827 for living costs plus the unpaid tuition balance. If the same student applies before 30 November, the old figure of £1,171 a month applies. In practice, most January applicants should simply plan around the higher figure and keep a buffer for rupee movements.

The 28-day rule still applies: the money must be held for at least 28 days in a row, and the end of that 28-day period must fall within 31 days of the date you apply. For the full background on this change, read our UK Student Visa Changes 2027 explainer.

Choose January if your English score, documents and funds are already in place. If you still need to retake IELTS or arrange a loan, September 2027 is usually the safer intake.

Rules to Know Before You Apply

Dependants

Since January 2024, most students on taught courses, including one-year master's degrees, cannot bring a spouse or children on their Student visa. The main exceptions are postgraduate research courses and certain government-sponsored students.

Work during study

Students on degree-level courses can usually work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full time during official vacations. Check your own visa conditions.

Choose a safe university

Only a licensed student sponsor can issue a CAS. With the Home Office tightening its checks on sponsors, read our guide on how to choose a safe UK university before you pay a deposit.

Common Mistakes Punjab Students Make with January Applications

  • Moving a large sum into the account at the last minute without a clear source, or letting the balance dip below the requirement during the 28 days

  • Applying for the visa before the 28-day period is complete, or more than 31 days after it ends

  • Using an SOP copied from a template that does not match the course and career plan (see our SOP writing guide)

  • Booking non-refundable flights before the visa decision

  • Assuming a spouse can join on a taught master's course

  • Paying an agent who promises a guaranteed visa. No one can guarantee a UK visa decision
