To qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in 2026, you must complete a program of at least 8 months at a PGWP-eligible college or university in Canada, study full-time, apply within 180 days of finishing, and meet a language requirement of CLB 7 (university degrees) or CLB 5 (college programs). Most college and non-degree university graduates must also have studied in an eligible field of study.

For students from Jalandhar and the rest of Punjab, the PGWP is usually the main reason to choose Canada: it is an open work permit that lets you gain the Canadian work experience that counts towards permanent residence. Since November 2024 the rules have become much stricter, and many students only discover a problem when it is too late to fix. This guide explains PGWP eligibility in 2026 using the official IRCC eligibility page.

Basic PGWP Eligibility Rules

According to IRCC, you must meet all of the following:

  • You completed a program of at least 8 months at a designated learning institution (DLI) whose program is PGWP-eligible.

  • You kept full-time student status in every academic session. Part-time study is allowed only in your final semester, and authorised leave of up to 150 days is permitted.

  • You apply within 180 days of receiving confirmation, such as a final transcript or official letter, that you completed your program.

  • Your study permit was valid at some point during those 180 days.

  • At least 50% of your program was completed in class in Canada, not through distance learning.

You are not eligible if you already had a PGWP, studied an English or French as a second language program, took a general interest or non-credit course, or studied in certain public-private "curriculum licensing" college programs that started after 15 May 2024.

PGWP Language Requirement: CLB Scores Explained

Every PGWP applicant (except flight school graduates) must submit language results that are less than two years old on the day they apply. IRCC accepts only these tests: CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core for English, and TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French. IELTS Academic and PTE Academic, which many Punjab students take for admission, are not on the list, so you may need to sit a second test before you graduate.

Level

IELTS General Training (minimum per skill)

PTE Core (minimum per skill)

CLB 7 (university degrees)

6.0 in listening, reading, writing and speaking

Speaking 68, listening 60, reading 60, writing 69

CLB 5 (college programs)

Listening 5.0, reading 4.0, writing 5.0, speaking 5.0

Speaking 51, listening 39, reading 42, writing 51

Field of Study Requirement

If you are in a college diploma, certificate or non-degree university program and you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024, your program must be linked to an eligible field of study, identified by its six-digit CIP code. The eligible fields are tied to occupations in long-term shortage, in areas such as agriculture and agri-food, education, healthcare and social services, STEM and trades.

Two official points help Punjab students plan with more confidence:

  • Grandfathering: if your CIP code was eligible when you applied for your study permit or PGWP, it stays eligible for you even if IRCC later removes it.

  • No changes in 2026: IRCC states on its field of study page that it will not add or remove any eligible fields of study in 2026.

Ask your college for your program's CIP code in writing before you pay fees, and check it against IRCC's list yourself.

How Long Will Your PGWP Be?

  • Program of 8 months to under 2 years: usually a PGWP matching the program length (for example, a 1-year diploma gives up to 1 year).

  • Program of 2 years or more: a PGWP of up to 3 years.

  • Master's degree of at least 8 months: up to 3 years, even if the course was shorter than 2 years.

  • Two eligible programs: you may be able to combine their lengths, but you must meet the highest language requirement among them.

Your PGWP cannot be valid beyond your passport's expiry date, so renew your Indian passport well before you apply. See IRCC's PGWP overview for details.

PGWP Application Checklist

  1. Get your final transcript or official completion letter from your college or university.

  2. Book an accepted language test early so your results are ready and less than two years old.

  3. Confirm your program's CIP code and keep proof of eligible field of study, if it applies to you.

  4. Check that your passport is valid for the full PGWP length you expect.

  5. Apply online through your IRCC account, inside or outside Canada, within 180 days.

  6. Pay the work permit fee (CAD 155) and the open work permit holder fee (CAD 100), plus biometrics (CAD 85) if required, as listed on IRCC's fee page.

  7. If your study permit was valid when you applied, you may be able to keep working while you wait, subject to IRCC's conditions.

If your study permit has already expired, IRCC allows you to apply within 90 days to restore your status as part of your PGWP application. Full steps are on the official how to apply page and documents page.

Planning Ahead from Punjab: Avoid These Mistakes

  • Choosing a cheap college program without checking its PGWP eligibility and CIP code.

  • Assuming your IELTS Academic score will be accepted for the PGWP.

  • Dropping to part-time study before your final semester.

  • Missing the 180-day deadline because you waited for a convocation ceremony.

  • Taking a large share of your course online.

Planning these points before you apply also strengthens your study permit file. Our Canada study permit proof of funds guide covers the financial side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What IELTS score do I need for a PGWP?

For a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree from a university you need CLB 7, which is IELTS General Training 6.0 in each of the four skills. For a college program you need CLB 5, which is at least 5.0 in listening, speaking and writing and 4.0 in reading. IELTS Academic is not on IRCC's list of accepted tests for the PGWP.

Is PTE accepted for the PGWP?

Yes, PTE Core is accepted. PTE Academic is not listed. For CLB 7 you need at least 68 speaking, 60 listening, 60 reading and 69 writing in PTE Core.

Do college diploma students need an eligible field of study for the PGWP?

Yes, if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024. Your program's CIP code must be on IRCC's eligible list. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree graduates are exempt.

How long will my PGWP be?

For programs of 8 months to under 2 years, the PGWP usually matches your program length. For programs of 2 years or more, and for eligible master's degrees of at least 8 months, it can be valid for up to 3 years, but never beyond your passport expiry date.

How long do I have to apply for a PGWP after graduating?

You must apply within 180 days of getting confirmation that you completed your program, and your study permit must have been valid at some point in that period.

Can I get a second PGWP?

No. IRCC issues only one PGWP per lifetime, so if you already had one after an earlier program you cannot get another.
