Germany Opportunity Card from India 2026: Eligibility, Points & Checklist for Punjab Applicants
The Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) lets skilled people from India move to Germany for up to one year to look for a job, without a job offer. You qualify either with a degree or vocational qualification fully recognised in Germany, or by scoring at least 6 points for factors such as experience, language and age. You must also show at least €1,091 per month (2026 rate) for living costs.
For graduates and working professionals in Jalandhar and across Punjab, it is one of the few routes into Europe that does not start with an employer or a university admission. This guide explains who qualifies for the Germany Opportunity Card from India, how the points work, which documents you need and the mistakes to avoid. It is based on the official Make it in Germany portal and the German Missions in India.

Germany Opportunity Card from India: Two Ways to Qualify
Option 1: Recognised skilled worker
If your university degree or vocational qualification is fully recognised in Germany, you are treated as a skilled worker and do not need points. Make it in Germany says you do not need to prove language skills on this route, although German is recommended for your job search. For an Indian university degree, recognition is usually shown through the anabin database or a ZAB Statement of Comparability.
Option 2: The points route
If your qualification is not fully recognised, you can still apply through the points system. You must first meet three basic requirements:
A university degree, or vocational training of at least two years, recognised by the state where you obtained it (India, for most of our clients).
Language skills of at least German A1 or English B2.
Proof that you can fund your stay: at least €1,091 per month in 2026.
Then you need at least 6 points from the table below.
Opportunity Card Points Table
Criterion | Points |
|---|---|
Partial recognition of your qualification in Germany | 4 |
Qualification in a German shortage occupation | 1 |
At least 2 years' relevant experience in the last 5 years | 2 |
At least 5 years' relevant experience in the last 7 years | 3 |
German A2 | 1 |
German B1 | 2 |
German B2 or higher | 3 |
English C1 or native speaker | 1 |
Age up to 35 | 2 |
Age 35 to 40 | 1 |
At least 6 months' legal stay in Germany in the last 5 years (not tourism or visits) | 1 |
Spouse or partner also eligible and applying together | 1 |
Experience counts only if it relates to your formal qualification and was gained after you qualified.
Example: how a Punjab applicant might score
This is an illustration, not a real client. Imagine a 29-year-old B.Tech graduate from Jalandhar with three years of software experience and a German A2 certificate. Age gives 2 points, experience gives 2 points and A2 German gives 1 point: a total of 5, which is one short. Reaching B1 German would add a point and take the total to 6. Partial recognition of the degree would add 4 points on its own. Always confirm your score with the official points check on the Consular Services Portal.
Document Checklist for Indian Applicants
Based on the German Missions in India's published requirements, prepare:
Passport issued within the last 10 years, with at least two blank pages.
Proof of funds of at least €1,091 per month: a blocked account or a formal declaration of commitment.
Health insurance valid from your date of entry.
Degree certificate and mark sheets.
For recognised degrees: anabin printout or ZAB Statement of Comparability (the mission asks for the university's anabin "H+" status).
For the points route: experience letters or contracts, and German (for example Goethe-Institut or telc) or English language certificates.
Documents proving partial recognition, shortage-occupation qualification or previous stay in Germany, if you claim those points.
A warning for PTE takers
Many Punjab students take PTE for Canada or Australia. The German Missions in India state that Pearson PTE, Duolingo and TOEFL online are not accepted as English proof for the Opportunity Card. Check the mission's list of accepted certificates before you book a test. Our PTE vs IELTS guide explains how the two tests differ.
Step-by-Step: Applying from Punjab
Check your degree and university on anabin, or apply for a ZAB Statement of Comparability.
Decide your route: full recognition (Option 1) or points (Option 2).
If using points, take an accepted German or English test and calculate your score with the official points check.
Open a German blocked account or arrange a formal declaration of commitment.
Buy health insurance that starts on your date of entry.
Submit your application online through the Consular Services Portal and follow the mission's instructions.
After arriving, search for a qualified job, using the 20-hour part-time and two-week trial work rules if helpful.
Once you find qualified employment, apply to your local foreigners authority for the right residence permit.
Common Mistakes That Delay Applications
Assuming every Indian university is recognised without checking anabin.
Claiming experience points for work unrelated to your qualification.
Submitting a PTE or Duolingo score as English proof.
Showing funds that do not meet the current monthly amount.
Arriving without a realistic job-search plan, CV in German format and basic German.
