The Canada Super Visa lets parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents visit for extended periods — up to 5 years per stay, on a visa valid for up to 10 years. For Jalandhar families with children settled in Canada, it's one of the most reliable ways to spend real time together without going through the slower Family Sponsorship PR process. Here's what changed for 2026 and how to apply from Jalandhar.

What is the Canada Super Visa?

It's a multiple-entry visitor visa (not permanent residence) specifically for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Unlike a standard visitor visa (usually 6 months per stay), the Super Visa allows a single stay of up to 5 years, and the visa itself can be valid for up to 10 years, subject to passport validity.

What changed in 2026

IRCC issued new Super Visa ministerial instructions effective March 31, 2026, easing how the income requirement can be met:

  • Hosts (and their co-signer, if any) can now meet the income requirement using either of the two most recent tax years — not just the latest one.

  • Income from the two preceding tax years can be combined, or 12 months of recent payslips can be used instead.

  • The applicant's own income earned in Canada can now also count toward the total.

Insurance and medical requirements are unchanged: applicants need private medical insurance from an approved insurer with a minimum of CAD 100,000 coverage, valid for at least one year from the date of entry into Canada. Recent updates allow certain international insurers that meet IRCC's regulatory criteria, in addition to Canadian ones. A medical exam by an IRCC-approved panel physician is still mandatory.

Core eligibility

  • You must be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

  • The host in Canada must meet the minimum necessary income (LICO), based on family size.

  • The application must be submitted while you're physically outside Canada.

  • No criminal record, and no health condition that poses a risk to Canadian public health or safety.

Application process

  • Gather proof of relationship (birth certificates, etc.) and the host's income documents under the new 2026 rules.

  • Purchase Super Visa medical insurance (min. CAD 100,000, valid 1+ year).

  • Complete the medical exam with an IRCC panel physician.

  • Submit the visa application with a letter of invitation from the host in Canada.

  • Attend biometrics collection if required.

FAQ

Can the Super Visa lead to permanent residence?

No — it's a long-stay visitor visa, not a PR pathway. Families wanting permanent settlement should look at Family Sponsorship instead; we can advise on which fits your situation.

How long does Super Visa processing take?

Processing times vary by visa office and change periodically; we track current IRCC timelines and give clients an up-to-date estimate at consultation.
