Short answer: To visit the United States for tourism, family visits or short business trips, Indian citizens need a B1/B2 visitor visa. The State Department application fee is $185 (non-refundable). For Indian nationals the visa can be issued for up to 10 years with multiple entries. Since 1 October 2025 most applicants, including children under 14 and adults over 79, must attend an in-person interview. The main exception is some renewals filed within 12 months of the previous visa expiring.

The US visitor visa from India is one of the most searched visas in Punjab. Parents want to visit children in California, New York or Texas, families attend weddings, and grandparents help with a new baby. This guide explains the 2026 rules, the steps from Punjab, a document checklist and the most common refusal reasons.

US Visitor Visa from India: B1, B2 or B1/B2?

The B visa covers two purposes, and Indian applicants usually receive a combined B1/B2 visa:

  • B1 (business): meetings with business associates, conferences and conventions, negotiating a contract or settling an estate.

  • B2 (tourism and family visits): holidays, visiting family and friends, medical treatment, social events and short recreational courses that do not count towards a degree.

According to travel.state.gov, you cannot study for credit, take a job, do paid performances or live permanently in the US on a visitor visa. Travelling mainly to give birth in the US so the child gets citizenship ("birth tourism") is also not allowed.

A US law passed in 2025 also introduced a separate "visa integrity fee" for many nonimmigrant visas. When we checked the State Department fee page in October 2026, it listed only the $185 application fee. Confirm the total payable on the official appointment website before you pay.

Who Still Needs an Interview?

Under the State Department update effective 1 October 2025, almost every nonimmigrant visa applicant needs an in-person interview with a consular officer. There is no longer a general exemption for young children or elderly parents. You may qualify for an interview waiver (often called "dropbox") only if all of these apply:

  • You are renewing a B1, B2 or B1/B2 visa within 12 months of the previous visa's expiry.

  • The previous visa was issued for its full validity.

  • You meet the minimum age of 18 set in the official notice.

  • You are applying in your country of nationality or residence.

  • You have never been refused a US visa (unless the refusal was overcome or waived) and have no apparent ineligibility.

Even then, the consular officer can still call you for an interview.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply from Punjab

  1. Fill in the DS-160 online. Answer every question accurately, including travel history, family in the US and the social media identifiers the form asks for. Upload a photo that meets the official requirements and print the confirmation page.

  2. Create your profile and pay the fee on the official US visa appointment website for India. Keep the receipt.

  3. Book two appointments: biometrics (fingerprints and photo) and the consular interview. Check the official Visa Appointment Wait Times tool for current waits. Applicants from Punjab usually choose New Delhi, but any US consular post in India can be selected.

  4. Prepare your documents using the checklist below.

  5. Attend the interview with original documents. Answer briefly and honestly in your own words.

  6. Collect your passport if the visa is approved, and check that the name, date of birth and visa type are correct.

Book only through official channels. The State Department warns that fees paid for an appointment outside your country of nationality or residence are not refunded or transferred, and qualifying there may be harder.

Document Checklist for Punjab Parents and Families

travel.state.gov lists only a few required documents, but the officer may ask for proof of your trip's purpose, your plan to return and your ability to pay. Keep these ready.

Required

  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond your stay, plus old passports showing travel history.

  • DS-160 confirmation page.

  • Fee payment receipt and appointment confirmation.

Supporting (bring originals, show only if asked)

  • Ties to India: employment letter, salary slips, business registration and ITRs, pension papers, land or property records (fard/jamabandi), and details of family staying in India.

  • Funds: bank statements showing a steady history, fixed deposits and income tax returns. A sudden large deposit with no explanation raises questions.

  • Purpose of visit: details of the family member you are visiting (their US status, address and occupation), a wedding card or delivery due date if relevant, and a rough itinerary.

  • For business visitors: a letter from your Indian employer and the US company or event invitation.

An invitation letter or affidavit of support from a US relative is not required. Your own ties and finances matter more than a sponsor's documents.

Why US Visitor Visas Get Refused (Section 214(b))

Most visitor visa refusals fall under Section 214(b) of US immigration law. It presumes every visitor intends to immigrate unless they show strong ties to their home country. Common reasons include:

  • Weak ties to India: no stable job, business, property or close family remaining at home.

  • Unclear purpose: vague answers about who you are visiting or how long you will stay.

  • Inconsistent answers: what you say at the interview does not match your DS-160.

  • Past immigration issues: an overstay or violation on a US or other visa.

  • Unexplained funds: large recent deposits or money that does not match your declared income.

A 214(b) refusal is not a permanent ban. The State Department says you may reapply if your circumstances have changed, but reapplying with the same profile and answers often gives the same result. Our guide to visa rejection reasons and how to avoid them covers the paperwork side in more detail.

At the US Airport and During Your Stay

A visa lets you travel to a US port of entry. It does not guarantee entry: a US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer decides how long you may stay and records it on your I-94 admission record. Keep these rules in mind:

  • Leave by the date on your I-94, not the visa expiry date.

  • Any extension must be requested from USCIS before your authorised stay ends.

  • Overstaying automatically voids your visa and can affect future US and other visa applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the US visitor visa fee from India in 2026?

The State Department lists the B1/B2 application fee as $185, which is non-refundable. Indian nationals pay no additional reciprocity issuance fee. Check the official appointment website for the amount in rupees and any new fees before you pay.

Do children and senior citizens need a US visa interview?

Generally yes. Since 1 October 2025 the State Department requires in-person interviews for nonimmigrant visa applicants of all ages, including children under 14 and adults over 79. The main exception is an eligible B1/B2 renewal filed within 12 months of the previous visa expiring.

How long is a US B1/B2 visa valid for Indians?

The reciprocity schedule allows B1/B2 visas for Indian nationals to be issued for up to 120 months (10 years) with multiple entries. The officer can issue a shorter validity. Each stay is decided by the CBP officer at entry and shown on your I-94.

Do I need an invitation letter from my son or daughter in the US?

No. travel.state.gov says a letter of invitation or affidavit of support is not needed for a visitor visa. Showing your own ties to India, funds and a clear purpose for the trip matters more.

Can I apply for a US visitor visa in Dubai or another country to get an earlier date?

Generally no. Nonimmigrant visa applicants should apply in their country of nationality or residence. The State Department says fees paid for applications elsewhere will not be refunded or transferred.

Can I reapply after a 214(b) refusal?

Yes. There is no fixed waiting period, but the State Department says you may reapply if your circumstances have changed. Address the reasons for the refusal, such as weak ties or unclear purpose, before booking again.
