Skills in Demand Visa 482 from India 2026: Streams, Salary Threshold and Checklist for Punjab Workers
Short answer: The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) is Australia's main employer-sponsored work visa. It replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa on 7 December 2024. To get a Skills in Demand visa 482 from India you need an approved Australian employer to sponsor and nominate you, at least 12 months of relevant work experience, the skills for the job and the required English. The visa can be granted for up to 4 years.
For applicants in Punjab, the 482 is often the most realistic way to work in Australia without first studying there, especially for experienced chefs, cooks, mechanics, electricians, nurses, aged-care staff, IT professionals and construction trades. Two official changes in 2026 matter: a higher salary threshold for nominations from 1 July 2026, and new processing priorities from 19 September 2026.
The Three Streams of the Skills in Demand Visa
Stream | Who it is for | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
Specialist Skills | Highly paid professionals and managers | Occupation in ANZSCO major groups 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6, and salary above the Specialist Skills income threshold |
Core Skills | Most sponsored skilled workers, including many trades | Occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List, and salary at least the Core Skills income threshold |
Labour Agreement | Workers sponsored under a labour agreement between an employer and the Australian Government | Terms set by the specific agreement |
Home Affairs describes Core Skills as the stream most temporary skilled workers come through. The Core Skills Occupation List covers 456 occupations. Trades workers (ANZSCO major group 3), machinery operators and drivers (group 7) and labourers (group 8) cannot use the Specialist Skills stream, so most Punjab tradespeople will be looking at Core Skills or a labour agreement. Always check your exact ANZSCO code on the official skilled occupation list.
Skills in Demand Visa 482 from India: Eligibility Checklist
Based on Home Affairs guidance, you will generally need all of the following:
An approved sponsor. An Australian employer that is an approved sponsor, or becomes one, and lodges a nomination for your position.
A genuine position. The employer must need the role, and in most cases must show it could not find a suitably skilled Australian worker first.
Salary at or above the threshold. For nominations lodged on or after 1 July 2026, the temporary skilled migration income threshold is AUD 79,423 a year, up from AUD 76,515. Your pay must also match what an Australian would get for the same job.
12 months of work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field.
The skills to do the job. Some occupations, and some applicants, need a formal skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority.
English. You must achieve a specific result in an accepted English test unless an exemption applies. Check the scores on the official English proficiency page, and see our IELTS score requirements by country guide.
Health and character. Medical checks and police certificates, including a Police Clearance Certificate from India.
On the visa you can generally work only for your sponsor (or an associated entity), and only in the nominated occupation, unless an exemption applies (Home Affairs).
What Changed in 2026
Higher salary threshold from 1 July 2026
The Home Affairs Legislation Amendment (2026 Measures No. 1) Regulations 2026 set the temporary skilled migration income threshold at AUD 79,423 for nomination applications made on or after 1 July 2026 (Federal Register of Legislation). Thresholds are indexed every year on 1 July, so a job offer that only just met last year's figure may no longer qualify. Nominations lodged earlier are assessed under the rules that applied when they were lodged.
New processing priorities from 19 September 2026
Ministerial Direction 121, in effect from 19 September 2026, sets the order in which temporary skilled visas, including the 482, are processed (Home Affairs):
Priority | Applications processed first |
|---|---|
1 | Construction, healthcare, teaching, agriculture, aquaculture, fishing and resources sectors, or law enforcement and defence interests |
2 | Specialist Skills stream of the Skills in Demand visa |
3 | Applicant was in Australia when the application was lodged |
4 | Primary applicant was outside Australia when lodging, and the application has never been combined with another person's application |
5 | All other applications |
For Punjab applicants, this is useful planning information. A nurse, aged-care worker or construction tradesperson sponsored in a priority sector should generally be processed ahead of, say, a retail or hospitality role. Home Affairs' own reporting showed the median processing time for skilled temporary visas rose from 48 to 109 days in the six months to December 2025, so a complete, decision-ready application matters.
Step-by-Step Process
Check your occupation and confirm it fits the Core Skills list or the Specialist Skills groups.
Gather evidence of experience: appointment letters, salary slips, bank credit of salary, provident fund or tax records and detailed reference letters.
Take an accepted English test and get a skills assessment if your occupation requires one.
Find a genuine employer. Apply through real job portals and employer websites, not 'visa-included' packages.
Employer becomes a sponsor and lodges the nomination for your position at the correct salary.
Lodge your 482 visa application online through ImmiAccount with your documents, and include eligible family members.
Complete health checks and biometrics when asked, and respond quickly to any request for information.
Document Checklist for Punjab Applicants
Valid passport and national identity documents
Signed employment contract or written job offer matching the nomination
Experience letters on company letterhead with duties, dates and hours
Salary evidence (salary slips, bank statements showing salary credits, Form 16 or ITRs)
Educational certificates and trade or professional qualifications
English test result
Skills assessment outcome, if required
Indian Police Clearance Certificate and police certificates from any other country where you lived
Marriage and birth certificates for family members included in the application
Can the 482 Lead to Australian PR?
Many 482 holders later move to permanent residence through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186), if they and their employer meet that visa's requirements. From 1 July 2026, the base application charge for a subclass 186 main applicant is AUD 6,140 for most applicants. Some workers instead qualify for points-tested routes; our Australia PR 189 vs 190 vs 491 guide compares those options.
Red Flags: Paid Sponsorship and 'Job Guarantee' Offers
Australian law makes it illegal for a sponsor, or anyone else, to ask for or accept payment in return for sponsoring a visa. If an agent in Punjab says a job offer 'comes with' a sponsorship fee, treat it as a serious warning sign. A real 482 nomination is lodged by a real employer at a real market salary, and you can check visa grants and conditions yourself in VEVO once a visa is granted.
