Short answer: Indian citizens need a visitor visa to holiday in New Zealand or visit family there. From 1 October 2026, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) stopped accepting paper forms for the standard Visitor Visa, the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa and about 20 other visitor categories. You now apply online through enhanced Immigration Online. Paper forms are accepted only in exceptional circumstances. The eligibility rules have not changed. You still need to show a genuine visit, enough money and onward travel.

For Punjab families, the New Zealand visitor visa from India is the main way parents visit children studying or working in Auckland, Christchurch or Hamilton. It is also how relatives travel for weddings and the birth of a grandchild. This guide explains the October 2026 change, the current fees and rules, and gives a checklist you can use before you apply.

What Changed on 1 October 2026?

INZ announced on 4 September 2026 that applications for 22 visitor visas and the Transit Visa must be made through enhanced Immigration Online from 1 October 2026. The main points for Indian applicants:

  • Online only: the Visitor Visa, Business Visitor, Group Visitor, Parent and Grandparent Visitor, Medical Treatment Visitor, Guardian Visitor and Culturally Arranged Marriage Visitor visas can no longer be filed on paper, except in exceptional cases.

  • Paper forms already filed are safe: INZ says paper applications submitted before 1 October 2026 will be processed as normal.

  • Some categories are not affected for now: partner and child visitor visas linked to a student, worker, military or New Zealander sponsor, plus the Temporary Retirement Visitor visa, can still use current channels until INZ says otherwise.

  • Same rules, new method: this is a change in how you apply, not in who qualifies.

If someone tells you that you need to send a paper file or physical bank documents for a standard visitor visa, ask why. Check INZ's announcement yourself. You can read it on the official INZ news page.

Parents and grandparents (and their partners) of a New Zealand citizen or resident

If your son or daughter is in New Zealand on a student or work visa and is not yet a resident, apply for the standard Visitor Visa. If they hold residence, the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa can save you from applying every year. A separate long-term option, the Parent Boost Visitor Visa, is explained in our New Zealand Parent Resident Visa guide.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply from Punjab

  1. Choose the right visa type. Pick the standard Visitor Visa or the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa, using the table above.

  2. Create your login. INZ's visitor visa guide says you need a RealMe login to apply online.

  3. Scan your documents. Make clear colour scans of every page of your passport that has details or stamps, plus your financial and family documents. You will upload these, so you do not need to post physical copies.

  4. Fill in the application. Enter your name and passport number exactly as shown in your passport. Answer the travel history and character questions honestly.

  5. Pay online. The fee, the immigration levy and, where it applies, the IVL are paid together.

  6. Respond to requests. INZ may ask for medicals, more documents or an interview. Check your email and your online account regularly.

  7. Check your visa. Once you have a decision, check the name, dates and conditions on your eVisa before booking non-refundable flights.

Processing times vary by season. December holidays and the New Zealand summer are busy, so apply well ahead. Check INZ's visitor visa wait times page instead of relying on dates you hear from others.

Document Checklist for a New Zealand Visitor Visa from India

Identity and travel

  • Passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from New Zealand

  • A recent photo that meets INZ's photo requirements

  • Onward or return ticket booking, or written confirmation from an airline or travel agent

  • A short travel plan: dates, cities and where you will stay

Money

  • Bank statements showing regular savings, not a large deposit made just before applying

  • Income proof: salary slips, pension papers, ITRs or land records for farming income

  • If sponsored: the Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry (INZ 1025) and your sponsor's evidence

Family and ties to Punjab

  • Proof of your relationship to the person you are visiting (birth certificate, marriage certificate)

  • A copy of your child's New Zealand visa or residence status and an invitation letter with their address

  • Evidence of ties at home: job, business, property, other family members, or a return date for a family event

Health

  • No medical certificate is needed for stays under six months

  • A Chest X-ray Certificate (INZ 1096) for stays of six to 12 months, as India is not on INZ's low-TB-risk list

  • A General Medical Certificate (INZ 1007) and chest X-ray for stays over 12 months, or for the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa

  • Comprehensive travel and health insurance. INZ says visitors are generally not eligible for publicly funded health care

Common Reasons Visitor Visas Are Refused

INZ must be satisfied that you are a genuine visitor. Refusals often come from:

  • Weak funds evidence: a sudden large deposit with no explanation, or no proof of where the money came from.

  • Unclear purpose: a vague trip plan or a stay much longer than the reason needs.

  • Poor travel or immigration history: past overstays, refusals that were not disclosed, or answers that do not match earlier applications to Canada, Australia or the UK.

  • Weak ties to India: little evidence of the job, family, property or commitments you will return to.

  • Inconsistent family details: the sponsor's letter, your form and your documents give different dates or addresses.

If you were refused before, address the specific reason in your new application. Our guide to student visa rejection reasons covers the same evidence principles.

Planning Ahead: Students, Workers and the FTA

Many visits start because a family member is studying or working in New Zealand. If your child is planning their own move, read our guide to the India New Zealand FTA visas and our New Zealand immigration overview. A visitor visa does not allow work, and study is limited to three months, so do not use it as a way to look for jobs.
