Short answer: To get an Ireland Critical Skills Employment Permit from India, you need a job offer of at least two years from an Irish employer, in either an occupation on the Critical Skills Occupations List paying at least €40,904 a year with a relevant degree, or almost any other eligible occupation paying at least €68,911. There is no labour market test, the permit fee is €1,000, and holders can usually move to Stamp 4 residence after 21 months.

Ireland is attracting growing interest from IT professionals, engineers, nurses and other graduates in Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Mohali and across Punjab. It is English-speaking, part of the EU, and its Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) offers one of the clearer routes from a job offer to long-term residence. This guide explains the 2026 rules, how the CSEP compares with Ireland's General Employment Permit, the documents you will need, and a step-by-step checklist for applying from Punjab.

What Is the Critical Skills Employment Permit?

The CSEP is issued by Ireland's Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment (DETE). It is designed for highly skilled roles that Ireland has identified as being in short supply. According to the official DETE page, the job offer must be for at least two years, and because the occupations are in short supply, no Labour Market Needs Test is required. In practice, this means your employer does not have to advertise the job first to show that no Irish or EEA worker is available.

An employment permit is not the same as a residence permission. Indian citizens also need an Irish entry visa to travel, and must register with the immigration authorities after arriving in Ireland.

Ireland Critical Skills Employment Permit from India: 2026 Salary Thresholds

Ireland raised its employment permit salary thresholds from 1 March 2026, as set out in the government's salary threshold roadmap. The current CSEP thresholds on the DETE website are:

Remuneration can include basic salary and health insurance payments to a registered insurer. The government has said thresholds will continue to rise in stages through 2030 and will be linked to average earnings, so always check the current figure on the day your employer applies.

Which occupations qualify?

The Critical Skills Occupations List is published by DETE and is reviewed regularly. It covers many professional roles in areas such as ICT, engineering, health care, science and finance. Check the exact job title and occupation code your employer will use against the current list, not a summary on a third-party website.

Core Eligibility Requirements

  • A job offer of at least two years from an employer registered in Ireland. Shorter offers fall under the General Employment Permit instead.

  • Salary at or above the relevant threshold shown in the table above.

  • The right qualifications, skills and experience for the role, usually a relevant degree for Critical Skills List occupations.

  • An eligible employer. In general, at least 50% of the employer's workforce must be EEA nationals at the time of application, with a possible waiver for certain start-ups.

  • An occupation that is not on the Ineligible List of Occupations and not contrary to the public interest.

Documents Checklist for Indian Applicants

Your employer or you can apply, but in practice most applications are handled by the employer through Employment Permits Online. Have these ready:

  • Valid Indian passport

  • Signed job offer or employment contract of at least two years, showing salary, duties and start date

  • Degree certificates and transcripts, plus professional registration where required (for example, NMBI decision letter for nurses)

  • Updated CV with detailed work experience letters from previous employers

  • Employer details, including registration and confirmation of its EEA workforce share

  • Passport-size photographs and any documents requested during processing

  • For the entry visa later: proof of the granted permit, funds, accommodation details and other visa documents listed by Irish immigration

Step-by-Step: Applying from Punjab

  1. Check that your role and job title appear on the current Critical Skills Occupations List, or that the salary meets the higher €68,911 threshold.

  2. Secure a written job offer of at least two years that meets the 2026 salary threshold.

  3. Your employer submits the CSEP application through Employment Permits Online, at least 12 weeks before your planned start date, and pays the €1,000 fee. If the application is refused, 90% of the fee is refunded.

  4. Respond within 28 days to any request for further information. If refused, a review can be requested within 28 days.

  5. Once the permit is granted, apply for an Irish employment visa online and submit your documents as instructed for applicants in India.

  6. After arriving in Ireland, register your immigration permission as soon as possible and start work with the employer named on your permit.

Bringing Your Family and Moving to Stamp 4

CSEP holders can apply for immediate family reunification. According to DETE, once a spouse, partner or dependant is resident in Ireland, they can seek any employment and can then apply for a free Dependant/Partner/Spouse Employment Permit. Check the latest family reunification rules on the Irish Immigration Service Delivery website before you apply.

For long-term settlement, CSEP holders can apply directly to the Department of Justice for Stamp 4 permission once they have spent a minimum of 21 months under Stamp 1 on the permit. Stamp 4 is granted for two years and can be renewed, and after 60 months of residence permission you may be able to apply for long-term residence.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Accepting a job offer below the current threshold, or one shorter than two years.

  • Relying on an old salary figure from before March 2026.

  • Paying anyone who promises a guaranteed job or permit in Ireland. Genuine permits depend on a real job offer from a real employer.

  • Booking travel before the permit and entry visa are both granted.
