New Zealand Short-Term Graduate Work Visa 2026: 6-Month Visa & PSWV Changes for Punjab Students
New Zealand will launch a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa on 16 November 2026. It gives eligible international graduates 6 months of open work rights after completing a NZQCF Level 5 to 7 qualification with at least 24 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand, if they do not qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa. On the same date, Level 7 graduate diplomas become eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa of up to 1 year for graduates who already hold a bachelor's degree.
Diplomas in New Zealand are a popular choice for students from Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar and across Punjab, and until now many shorter courses led to no post-study work option at all. This explainer covers who qualifies for the New Zealand Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, how it compares with the Post-Study Work Visa, and what Punjab students should plan for. It is based on official Immigration New Zealand (INZ) announcements first published in March 2026 and confirmed in September 2026.
What Is Changing on 16 November 2026?
A new visa: the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa offers 6 months of open work rights for graduates who are not eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa.
Wider Post-Study Work Visa eligibility: NZQCF Level 7 graduate diplomas studied full-time in New Zealand will qualify, as long as the graduate holds a bachelor's degree from New Zealand or overseas.
Online applications: both visas are applied for through Immigration Online from 16 November 2026.
New Zealand Short-Term Graduate Work Visa: Who Is Eligible?
According to the INZ launch announcement, you may be eligible if you:
completed a qualification at NZQCF Level 5 to 7 and studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks
did not study an English language, foundation or bridging qualification
are not eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa
have at least NZD 5,000 available to support yourself
have a valid medical certificate and chest X-ray, if these are required for your length of stay
have never held a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa or a Post-Study Work Visa
apply within 3 months of your New Zealand student visa expiring
INZ also notes that if your study was funded under the New Zealand Scholarship Programme, you need written ministry approval before applying.
Conditions to know before you apply
You can work for employers under an employment agreement, but you cannot be self-employed or run your own business.
You cannot support a partner's work visa or your children's dependent student visas. They may be able to apply for visitor visas.
The visa cannot be extended, and you can only hold it once.
You can later return to study at a higher level, which may make you eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa in future.
Post-Study Work Visa Changes for Graduate Diploma Holders
From 16 November 2026, INZ says graduates of a NZQCF Level 7 graduate diploma can apply for a Post-Study Work Visa if they studied full-time in New Zealand for the whole qualification (cross-credited study does not count) and hold a bachelor's degree from New Zealand or any other country, with no time limit on when it was completed. The visa length matches the time spent studying, up to a maximum of 1 year.
This is useful for Punjab students who already have an Indian bachelor's degree such as a BA, BCom, BSc or BTech. INZ says an International Qualification Assessment is not required for an overseas bachelor's degree on this route, but you must provide your degree certificate and official transcript, and INZ may check that they are genuine. See the INZ graduate diploma update for the full wording.
Keep in mind that a person can only ever be granted one Post-Study Work Visa, so it is worth planning which qualification you use it on.

What This Means for Punjab Students
Diploma students get a safety net, not a residence pathway. Six months is a short window. The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa can help you earn, gain New Zealand work experience and look for a job with a longer-term visa option, but it does not lead to residence on its own. Start applying for jobs before your course ends.
Bachelor's holders have a new option. If you finished your degree in Punjab some years ago, a one-year Level 7 graduate diploma in New Zealand may now lead to a Post-Study Work Visa of up to 1 year. Compare that with a Level 8 postgraduate diploma or a master's before you choose, because course level and length decide your work rights.
Avoid courses that do not count. English language, foundation and bridging programmes do not qualify for the new visa. Check the NZQCF level and duration of any course with the provider before you pay fees.
Plan your finances. You need to show NZD 5,000 at the time you apply, on top of the money you need for your studies. Keep your bank statements in order.
