Express Entry Trades Draw October 2026: What Punjab Electricians, Welders and Plumbers Should Know
Short answer: On 1 October 2026, IRCC held an Express Entry draw for trade occupations and issued 3,500 invitations to apply (ITAs) for permanent residence. The lowest score invited was CRS 476. To be considered in a trades draw you need at least 12 months of full-time work (or the same amount part-time) in one listed trade within the past 3 years, in Canada or abroad, and you must already qualify for an Express Entry program.
Electricians, welders, plumbers, carpenters and HVAC mechanics from Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur and Doaba often ask us whether trade skills alone can lead to Canada PR. This update explains the latest Express Entry trades draw 2026 results, which occupations count, and what a realistic plan looks like if your experience is in Punjab. Draw figures are taken from IRCC's rounds of invitations page and eligibility rules from IRCC's category-based selection page.
Express Entry Trades Draw 2026: The Latest Results
IRCC has held two trades draws so far in 2026. Here is how they compare with other recent draws, so you can see where trades sit:
Draw date (2026) | Draw type | Invitations | Lowest CRS invited |
|---|---|---|---|
1 October | Trade occupations | 3,500 | 476 |
29 September | Canadian Experience Class | 2,000 | 518 |
28 September | Provincial Nominee Program | 733 | 725 |
4 September | Healthcare and social services | 3,500 | 475 |
2 April | Trade occupations | 3,000 | 477 |
Two things stand out. First, the trades cut-off (476) is far below recent general Canadian Experience Class draws (around 518 to 521). Second, the April and October trades cut-offs were almost identical, so 470s has been the zone to plan around this year. Past cut-offs are not a promise of future ones; IRCC decides the size and score of each round.
Which Trades Are Eligible?
IRCC's current trades category lists these occupations (2021 NOC codes). Your experience must be in one of them:
Group | Eligible occupations (NOC) |
|---|---|
Electrical | Electricians, except industrial and power system (72200); Industrial electricians (72201); Electrical mechanics (72422) |
Metal and machining | Machinists and machining and tooling inspectors (72100); Sheet metal workers (72102); Welders and related machine operators (72106) |
Plumbing, gas and HVAC | Plumbers (72300); Gas fitters (72302); Heating, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics (72402) |
Wood and building trades | Carpenters (72310); Cabinetmakers (72311); Bricklayers (72320); Concrete finishers (73100); Roofers and shinglers (73110); Painters and decorators (73112); Floor covering installers (73113) |
Mechanics and millwrights | Construction millwrights and industrial mechanics (72400); Heavy-duty equipment mechanics (72401) |
Management and estimating | Construction estimators (22303); Construction managers (70010); Home building and renovation managers (70011) |
Other | Water well drillers (72501); Other technical trades (72999); Oil and gas drilling contractors and supervisors (82021); Butchers, retail and wholesale (63201) |
Match your actual duties, not just your job title, to the NOC description. A worker called a "technician" in a Ludhiana factory may fit industrial electrician or millwright duties, while someone called an "electrician" who mainly sells fittings will not. Experience letters should list duties, hours per week, salary and dates.
The Two Tests: Category Rule and Program Eligibility
Many applicants miss that a trades draw has two layers. Meeting the category rule is not enough on its own.
1. The trades category rule
At least 12 months of full-time work experience, or an equal amount of part-time experience.
The experience must be within the past 3 years and does not need to be continuous.
It must be in a single listed occupation, and it can be gained in Canada or abroad.
2. You must qualify for an Express Entry program
You also need to be eligible for one of the three Express Entry programs. For applicants whose experience is in India, the two realistic options are:
Requirement | Federal Skilled Trades (FST) | Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) |
|---|---|---|
Work experience | 2 years full-time (3,120 hours) in a skilled trade within the last 5 years | 1 year continuous (1,560 hours) in a TEER 0-3 job within the last 10 years |
English (CLB) | CLB 5 speaking and listening; CLB 4 reading and writing | CLB 7 in all four abilities |
Extra requirement | A full-time job offer of at least 1 year, OR a Canadian certificate of qualification in your trade | 67 points on the FSW selection grid, plus an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for foreign education |
Proof of funds | Required unless you can legally work in Canada and have a valid job offer | Required unless you can legally work in Canada and have a valid job offer |
Sources: FST eligibility and FSW eligibility on canada.ca. The Canadian Experience Class is the third route, but it needs skilled work experience in Canada.
The FST certificate of qualification is issued by a Canadian province or territory, and most overseas workers find it hard to get without first being in Canada. That is why many Punjab tradespeople enter the pool through FSW instead, as long as they have 1 year of continuous experience, CLB 7 English and 67 points on the selection grid.
What a CRS of 476 Means for Applicants from Punjab
A score in the 470s, where every Express Entry trades draw 2026 has landed so far, is achievable but demanding for someone with only Indian work experience. Since 25 March 2025, IRCC no longer gives CRS points for job offers, so a purchased "job offer" will not raise your score. The levers that do help are:
Higher English scores: moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 or above in all four abilities is usually the biggest single gain. Only CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core are accepted, and results must be under 2 years old (language testing).
French: strong French (NCLC 7 or higher) adds significant points and can make you eligible for French-language draws, which have had lower cut-offs this year.
Spouse factors: a spouse's education, language score and Canadian experience can add points.
Age and education: points are highest between about 20 and 29 and drop after that, and a verified diploma or degree helps.
Provincial nomination: a PNP nomination adds 600 CRS points. Several provinces run streams for in-demand trades; see our Canada PNP guide.
Step-by-Step Checklist for Punjab Tradespeople
Confirm your NOC: compare your daily duties with the NOC code from the eligible list above.
Count your experience: check you have at least 12 months full-time in one listed trade in the past 3 years, and work out whether you also meet FSW (1 year) or FST (2 years) rules.
Collect proof: reference letters on company letterhead with duties, hours, salary and dates, plus salary slips, bank credits, PF or tax records.
Take an accepted English test: IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, aiming above the minimum.
Get an ECA for your ITI, diploma or degree if you are using FSW, or to earn education points.
Calculate your CRS honestly with IRCC's official tool, then decide whether to improve English, add French or target a PNP.
Prepare proof of funds in your name, kept in the bank over time.
Create your Express Entry profile and keep it updated. Trades draws pick from the existing pool, so you must be in it before a draw.

Proposed Express Entry Reforms: Not Final Yet
In April 2026, IRCC published a discussion paper on Express Entry reforms. Among the ideas: merging FSW, CEC and FST into one program, setting language at CLB 6, and recognising only Red Seal certificates for trades points. These are proposals for consultation, not current rules. IRCC also says Express Entry categories are not part of that consultation. Apply under today's rules and watch for official announcements.
Avoid Job-Offer and "Trades Quota" Scams
There is no special quota you can buy into. IRCC picks candidates from the pool by score and category. Be cautious of anyone in Punjab offering a paid LMIA or job offer "to guarantee PR", fake experience letters, or a promised ITA. Misrepresentation can lead to refusal and a ban from applying.
Frequently Asked Questions
What was the CRS cut-off in the October 2026 Express Entry trades draw?
The trade occupations draw on 1 October 2026 issued 3,500 invitations, and the lowest-ranked candidate invited had a CRS score of 476. The previous trades draw on 2 April 2026 invited 3,000 candidates at 477.
How much work experience do I need for the Express Entry trades category?
At least 12 months of full-time work experience, or an equal amount of part-time experience, in one eligible trade within the past 3 years. It does not need to be continuous and can be gained in Canada or abroad. You must also be eligible for an Express Entry program.
Can I apply for the trades category with only Indian work experience?
Yes. The trades category does not require Canadian experience. However, you still need to qualify for an Express Entry program, usually the Federal Skilled Worker Program if you have no Canadian job offer or Canadian certificate of qualification.
Do I need a job offer for Canada Express Entry as a tradesperson?
Not for the Federal Skilled Worker Program. The Federal Skilled Trades Program needs either a qualifying job offer or a Canadian certificate of qualification. Job offers no longer give CRS points since 25 March 2025.
What IELTS score do I need for the Federal Skilled Trades Program?
FST needs CLB 5 in speaking and listening and CLB 4 in reading and writing. On IELTS General Training, CLB 5 is listening 5.0, speaking 5.0, writing 5.0 and reading 4.0. Higher scores give far more CRS points.
Which trades are eligible for Express Entry category draws in 2026?
IRCC lists 25 occupations, including electricians, industrial electricians, welders, plumbers, gas fitters, carpenters, cabinetmakers, HVAC mechanics, heavy-duty equipment mechanics, machinists, painters, roofers and construction managers.
